The Da Vinci Museums in Tuscany: Which One Should You Visit?
Looking for Trip Planning?
index
Leonardo da Vinci truly embodies the spirit of the Renaissance — a brilliant painter, inventor, engineer, and visionary. Across Italy, many museums celebrate his work, and Tuscany alone is home to several well-known Leonardo da Vinci museums.
This abundance can be confusing for travelers. Questions I’m often asked include:
What exactly is “the” da Vinci museum?
Is it worth visiting?
What’s the difference between the da Vinci museum in Vinci and the da Vinci museums in Florence?
In this post, I’ll clarify the different options and help you decide which Leonardo da Vinci museum is best for your trip — and for your group.
The Da Vinci Museum in Vinci (Tuscany)
Leonardo da Vinci’s name literally means “Leonardo from Vinci.” He was born in the small hamlet of Anchiano, just a few kilometers from the town of Vinci, in the Tuscan countryside.

The main museum here is called the Museo Leonardiano di Vinci.
Visitors can purchase a combo ticket that includes:
The house where Leonardo da Vinci was born (in Anchiano)
Both sections of the Museo Leonardiano di Vinci
While the birth house is historically interesting, it doesn’t contain much. For this reason, the combo ticket is better value.
What Will You See at the Museo Leonardiano di Vinci?
After visiting Leonardo’s birthplace, you can drive into the town of Vinci to explore the museum itself, which is split into two locations:
1. Guidi Castle
Housed inside the castle, this section displays models of Leonardo’s inventions, including:
War machines
Studies of flight
Bridges
A prototype tank
2. Palazzo Uzziali
Just a two-minute walk away, this second section features additional models of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions, further expanding on his engineering and scientific ideas.
Can You See Da Vinci Paintings at the Vinci Museum?
No. The Da Vinci museums don’t contain any art!The Museo Leonardiano di Vinci focuses exclusively on Leonardo’s inventions and scientific studies, not his paintings.
If you want to see Leonardo da Vinci’s artwork, I recommend visiting the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where some of his paintings are displayed.

Are There Da Vinci Museums in Florence?
Yes — there are two Leonardo da Vinci museums in Florence.
Like the museum in Vinci, both Florence museums focus on Leonardo’s machines and inventions, not his paintings. However, there is one key difference:
👉 The Florence museums are highly interactive. Visitors — especially children — are encouraged to touch, operate, and experiment with many of the machines.
By contrast, at the Vinci museum, the models are not interactive and must be viewed only.
So, Which Da Vinci Museum Should You Visit?
If you’re exploring the Tuscan countryside, the Museo Leonardiano di Vinci is well worth a stop. The exhibits are engaging, and the town of Vinci itself is small, charming, and very atmospheric. You could also explore additional attractions in the area, and try the excellent olive oil produced in these hills (Vinci is famous for its olive oil).
If you’re staying in Florence, there’s no need to make a special trip to Vinci. The two da Vinci museums in Florence are excellent, especially for families and children who enjoy hands-on experiences.
Both options are worthwhile — the best choice really depends on where you’re based and who you’re traveling with.
