7 Stunning Panoramic Viewpoints in Florence You Can’t Miss

I’ve lived in Tuscany for 20 years, and no matter how well I think I know the city, there are moments when it still stops me in my tracks—usually when I see it from above. Florence is beautiful at street level, of course, but it’s from the panoramic viewpoints that the city really reveals itself: the red rooftops, the curve of the Arno, the Duomo anchoring everything in place, and the Tuscan hills quietly framing it all.
Whenever friends, clients, or guests ask me what they shouldn’t miss in Florence, panoramic viewpoints are always high on my list. They’re the places where you pause, catch your breath, and think, ah, yes—this is why people fall in love with this city. Some are famous, some are a little more under the radar, but each one offers a different way of seeing Florence.
Below are seven of my favorite panoramic viewpoints in Florence—places I return to again and again, whether I’m playing tour guide, chasing good light, or just in the mood to admire the city from a slightly higher vantage point.
1. Piazzale Michelangelo
Let’s start with the obvious one. Piazzale Michelangelo is Florence’s most famous viewpoint, and yes—it really is that good. Sitting on a hill just south of the Arno River, it offers one of the best panoramic views in Florence, with the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and Ponte Vecchio all clearly visible.
I always suggest coming at sunset. The light changes quickly, the rooftops glow, and Florence puts on a bit of a show. It does get crowded, but there’s a reason for that. Grab a gelato from a nearby kiosk, find a spot along the wall, and enjoy the moment. Even after years here, I still do.
2. Giardino Bardini (Bardini Gardens)
When I want a beautiful view of Florence without the crowds of Piazzale Michelangelo, I head to the Bardini Gardens. They’re one of Florence’s quieter treasures, and the panoramic view from the upper terrace is elegant, green, and calm.
The gardens themselves are a pleasure to explore, especially in spring when the wisteria is in bloom. If you can, buy a ticket that also includes access to the Boboli Gardens, since the two are connected. It makes for a very civilized few hours above the city.
3. Boboli Gardens Amphitheater Terrace
The Boboli Gardens are vast and offer several scenic viewpoints, but the amphitheater terrace near the top is the one I most often recommend. This is Florence seen through a Medici lens—formal, theatrical, and carefully designed.
Walk slowly, take in the fountains and statues, and enjoy how the view unfolds as you move through the garden. It’s one of those places where history, landscape, and cityscape come together naturally.
4. Campanile di Giotto (Giotto’s Bell Tower)
If you’re up for a climb (414 steps, to be exact), Giotto’s Bell Tower offers one of the most rewarding panoramic views in Florence. Unlike hilltop viewpoints, this one places you right in the historic center, eye-level with rooftops and incredibly close to Brunelleschi’s Dome.
The climb is steep and there’s no elevator—but the view is worth every step. You also get to appreciate the tower itself, with its beautiful marble decoration and architectural details that are easy to miss from below.
5. Brunelleschi’s Dome (The Duomo Cupola)
Climbing the Dome is something I usually recommend only if you’re comfortable with narrow staircases—but if you are, it’s unforgettable. You don’t just see Florence from the top of Brunelleschi’s Cupola; you understand it.
On the way up, you’ll walk between the inner and outer shells of the dome and get an extraordinary close-up view of Vasari’s Last Judgment frescoes. At the top, you’re rewarded with a full 360-degree panoramic view of Florence: rooftops, hills, the Arno, and the city stretching in every direction.
6. San Miniato al Monte
San Miniato al Monte is one of those places I keep coming back to, especially when I want a quieter panoramic view of Florence. It’s just a short walk uphill from Piazzale Michelangelo, but it feels worlds away.
The Romanesque basilica is beautiful, and the view rivals—if not surpasses—its more famous neighbor. Visit in the evening if you can. If you hear the monks chanting, consider yourself lucky. It’s one of those Florence moments that stays with you.
7. Torre di Arnolfo (Palazzo Vecchio Tower)
Right in the heart of Florence, the Torre di Arnolfo offers a very different kind of panoramic viewpoint. Climbing this medieval tower gives you a bird’s-eye view over Piazza della Signoria, with the Duomo, Santa Croce, and the surrounding Tuscan hills visible in the distance.
Late afternoon is an especially nice time to visit, when the light softens and the city takes on warmer tones—great for photos, if that’s your thing.
In short: if you’re looking for the best views in Florence, a mix of famous viewpoints and quieter, lesser-known spots will give you a richer, more memorable experience of the city.
